Additional Details:
This pioneer iron furnace was built in 1854 by Brian Newell and Co., this steam "cold blast"charcoal furnace was built of limestone from the surrounding hills (now Stewart County) and is a pattern used in this section of Tennessee for such iron industry prior to and during the time of the Civil War. The iron ore came from shallow deposits nearby the furnaces due to difficulty of transportation which was normally done by oxen and heavy carts or wagons...Pig Iron was shipped on the Cumberland and Tennessee rivers or hauled to the rolling mills to the east. This particular furnace closed in 1856 due to lack of ore and to a slave insurrection by the furnace crew
