President Reagan and his wife, Nancy arrived in Ireland on June 1, 1984, for a three day visit to the President's ancestral country. After spending several hours at Ashford Castle, they traveled to Galway in the north of the country. The President was made a Doctor of Law honoris causa at the University of Galway. On Sunday, June 3, 1984, the President spent several hours in the small village of Ballyporeen where his great-grandfather was born at the beginning of the 19th Century. The President and Nancy sipped a beer at the "Ronald Reagan Pub" before leaving for a small official ceremony. June 1-4, 1984
