COLTON HALL
The first state Capitol building. The con-
vention that made application for California
to be admitted into the Union and drafted her
first constitution, met here. Built in 1849 by
the Rev. Walter Colton, the alcalde of Monte-
rey. Much of the early history of the state
is associated with Colton Hall. It is now the
City Hall of Monterey. It faces Pacific street,
between Madison and Jefferson streets, Just
behind Colton Hall is the home of Governor
Alvarado, the most prominent of the Mexican
governors in Monterey.
