The City Hall of New York is one of the quaint beauties of the old regime. Built from 1803 to 1812 this marble house for Gotham's mayors has been the stage for many an historic scene. Perry's victory on Lake Erie in 1812 made it look like a "sea of Fire". It acclaimed La fayette, celebrated the opening of the Erie canal, and the laying of the Atlantic cable. Lincoln and Grant lay in dead state within it. The Governor's Room contains furniture used by the first Congress of the United States, and here are the two desks used by Washington. During the World War, Joffe, Balfour, and all the lions and leaders of the world who came, stood on the seps of the City Hall. Heberman's New York Views.
