Major John Andre, the British officer spy, was captured September 23, 1780 in Tarrytown by three local patriots, John Paulding, David Williams, and Isaac Van Wart. He carried, hidden in his boot, the plans of West Point which he had secured from the traitor, Benedict Arnold.
