The first appropriation of $15,000 to buy a site and erect an Executive Mansion was made by the Legislature on February 12, 1853. The Mansion was officially opened November 30, 1855. Abraham Lincoln watched the erection of the Mansion. The Mansion has been the home of the Governors of the State of Illinois and a center of Springfields' social life since 1855.
