Birthplace of the American Circus
Statue of Old Bet, first circus elephant, stands
outside the Elephant Hotel, now the Town Hall.
Hackaliah Bailey bought Old Bet between 1805 &
1810 and exhibited for gain in the first traveling
menagerie in America, ancestor of today's Big Top.
The Hotel was completed in 1825 and Statue mounted
in 1827 – two grateful monuments of appreciation
from Mr. Bailey to Old Bet. There is a circus museum
inside the Hotel.
