Dr. Elisha Mitchell, scholar and teacher, lies
buried on the top of Mount Mitchell. Dr.
Mitchell was the first recorded discoverer of
Mount Mitchell's 6684 feet summit, the highest
point of the land in Eastern America. His one-
way trip to this summit led to his untimely
death as the result of a fall into a ferned pool
not so far from the scene of his triumph.
