Additional Details:
Fumeroles (steam vents) boil at edge of the once beautiful, clear lake. Strewn with logs and ash, the mudflow boiled down wooded slopes and filled Spirit Lake. Will the lake ever be a "haunting blue" again? The Indians named it Spirit Lake because they believed the entire region belonged to the dead. Surely this is not prophetic, but its fate its tied to the Indians " five miles to the north. Only time will reveal what the scientists seem unable to tell us
