The stately mansion on Washington Street, nearly opposite Mason Street, was built in 1768, and occupied by Col. Jeremiah Lee, a wealthy merchant. It was one of the largest and most costly in the colony, built of materials brought from England. Here Washington was entertained on the occasion of his memorable visit to Marblehead. Lafayette was here twice an honored guest, and Andrew Jackson was s visitor and here tendered a notable reception.
