Additional Details:
Charlestown is the county seat of Jefferson County, West Virginia (then Virginia), and on the Shenandoah Branch of the Baltimore & Ohio, about 10 miles southwest of Harper's Ferry. In 1859 it had a population of less than 1,500. about one third of whom were colored. It is surrounded by a fertile and beautiful country. The jail in which John Brown was confined and from which he was taken to execution has been rebuilt and modernized."
