The name Oswegatchie is of Indian
origin. It is said that when the In-
dians made camp in this vicinity one
time, their tethered houses became
frightened and broke loose. The In-
dians gave chase and finally cornered
them at the place where the town of
Oswegatchie now stands. They began
yelling in broken English "Hos-we-.
got-che.”
