Additional Details:
Tennessee State Capitol Building was erected in 1845-1853, at a cost of $2,500,000,00. The architectural idea is that of a Greek Ionic Temple. The architect, William Strickland of Philadelphia, died before the building was completed and was entombed in a recess in the north wall. The building stands on an eminence 175 feet above the Cumberland River and the building has an elevation of 75 feet 8 inches above the ground. On the terrace grounds several handsome pieces of statuary. These include an equestrain statue of Stonewall Jackson, a tomb of President Polk, and the Sam Davis monument
