Additional Details:
The State Capital, started in 1833 and finished in 1840, replaces the first state house which burned in 1831. Originally this building housed all of North Carolina's State Government; as the state grew, new buildings were built around Capital Square; the State Dept. Building, etc. The new Legislative Building, one block north of the capital, is the only building in the United States devoted exclusively to the law making branch of government.
