President Ronald Reagan, in his role of “Commander-in-Chief” of the Armed Forces, made his first visit to an aircraft carrier, the U. S. S. constellation, 55 miles off the California coast. Addressing the 5,000 officers and crew, Reagan reaffirmed his pleadge of “a 600 ship Navy . . . a Navy large enough to deter any aggressions.” After viewing air and sea operations, the elated President was heard to enthusiastically declare the entire visit, “a Yankee Doodle Day.” August 20, 1981. |
