The American Museum of natural History New York, U. S. A. Jaguar (Felis onca hernandesii) The jaguar is the largest American cat. It looks like the leopard, but is heavier in build, Jaguars are found from our Mexican border to northern Argentina. They live in forest, plain, and desert, but seem to prefer the wooded country. They prey on peccaries, deer, tapir, and capybara, and often come to the sea shore or river bank to hunt turtles and turtle eggs and even fish. Only rarely does one attack a man.
