Field Museum of Natural History Chicago, U. S. A. African Elephants Stanley Field Hall. There are only two species of elephants now living, the African and the Indian. The African species has enormous ears, a bulging rounded forehead, a concave back, and large tusks in both sexes. The larger animal in this group stands 10 feet 10½ inches at the shoulder. The common elephant of circuses is the Indian elephant. Specimens collected and taxidermy by C. E. Akeley.
