This Trowell the property of Alexandria Washington Lodge no. 22 A. F. & A. M. was used by General George Washington September 18th 1793 to lay the corner stone of the capitol of the United States of America at Washington D. C. This trowel was first used by General Washington at the laying of the corner store of the National Capitol in 1793. It was used a second time for the laying of the Corner stone of the Smithsonian Institution in 1846, and shortly afterward for the laying of the corner stone of the Masonic temple in Washington, D. C. and, on November 1, 1923, at the laying of the corner stone of the George Washington, D. C. and, on November 1, 1923, at the laying of the corner stone of the George Washington Masonic National Memorial at Alexandria Va., by acting Grand Master (since Grand Master) Charles H. Callahan of Virginia, assisted by the President of the United States and representatives of Grand Lodges throughout the United States.
