During the War Between the States, the Confederates
placed cannons on the Point of Lookout Mountain, com-
manding the valley below. It was here that the Battle Above
the Clouds was fought on November 24th, 1863. The Union
forces finally stormed the heights and drove the Confeder-
Wates off. The City of Chattanooga and the Tennessee River
may be seen in the valley below.
