Additional Details:
Established in 1798-the Mission San Luis, Rey de Francia, was destined to become the greatest and richest of all in California. In its fullest glory it grazed 25,000 cattle on its 200,000 acres, owned 10,000 horses, and 3,000 Indian converts were engaged in its industrial activities. The walls of the Mission church were five feet in thickness; the tower had space for eight or more bells. When the Mexican government turned against the Missions the priests of San Luis Rey fled and the mission went into decay. In 1892, the work of restoration began and the mission is now again in use.
