This view shows the overflowing of the spillway in the summer of 1983. The beauty of two engineering masterpieces becomes even more breathtaking when Glen Canyon Dam and Rainbow Bridge are framed in shadows of deep canyon walls. Dam and bridge appear to be one. Actually they stand almost one thousand feet apart. The dam's visible mass rises five hundred eighty feet above waters of the Colorado River. The enormous power plant at its base rests on a three hundred-feet-thick dam foundation extending one hundred thirty feet down into bedrock.
