| This bridge named for Gen. Burnside whose Corps made repeated attempts with greatly superior numbers to force the bridge, but was driven back at the Battle of Antietam or Sharpsburg in 1862. This historic battle between the States was the bloodiest with over 20,000 casualties being suffered by both sides. |
