Description:
Oldest restaurant west of the Mississippi; still open seven days a week (noon buffet a specialty). It was built in 1857 by Seth Hays. Its original appearance has been preserved. Mr. Hays, Daniel Boone's great-grandson, left Westport, Missouri, in 1847 to found Council Grove.

Description:
Registered as an historic landmark, this two-story red brick building was erected in 1887. Of Renaissance style, it features much ornamental ironwork.

Description:
Established 1850-1851 by the Methodist Episcopal Church as a mission and school for the Kaw Indians, and now administered as a museum by the Kansas State Historical Society. Open to public without charge.

Description:
Council Grove is one of the most historical cities in Kansas. Fremont's expedition of 1845 and Doniphan's troop bound for the Mexican War in 1846 camped here. In 1849, when the overland mail was established, it was a supply headquarter, followed the next year by the regular monthly coach service, Main Street is part of the old Sante Fe Trail. Among the numerous historical markers and monuments is the ""Madonna of the Trail"" monument, a memorial to the Pioneer Mothers of Covered Wagon Days
