This the fifteenth and largest of the California Missions was founded on St. John's Day, 1797. The Mission Sadly neglected for many years was restored in 1884. Under the leadership of Father Estevan Tapis, an excellent man for the position, in 1823, the population figures at the mission reached their highest point. Above the mission on Pagan Hill a wooden cross was erected by the mission Fathers to ward off evil when they discovered their Indian neophytes secretly practicing pagan religious rites on the spot.

San Jose the Guadalupe, near Warm Springs, Alameda County, the fourteenth Mission, and the only one on the east side of San Francisco bay, was founded June 11, 1797. Many maps erroneously show this Mission at the present city of San Jose, which was an old Spanish Pueblo three miles form the Mission of Santa Clara, with which it was connected by "The Alameda", a road lined with willow trees planted by Fr. Maguin Catala. The original picture of Mission San Jose, shown on this card, is from a rare daguerreotype made before the destruction of the edifice.

Founded in California 1771. The unique architecture of San Gabriel Mission is shown in its flying buttresses, outside stairway and in the bell tower with its several arches built to correspond to the different sizes of the bells. For many years until the Pueblo de Los Angeles built a church, the largest bell was rung two hours before the services to give the settlers ample time to arrive in their oxcarts.

The outside stairway to the choir of the Mission San Gabriel Arcangel has been used since 1771 by devout generations. On the direct route from Mexico to Monterey, the San Gabriel Mission, noted for its abundant crops, was the first supply station after crossing the mountains and desert. This road, called Ël Camino Real""(The Royal Road), extend from Guatamala to San Francisco, and is marked in California by bronze bells

Description:
Established in 1798-the Mission San Luis, Rey de Francia, was destined to become the greatest and richest of all in California. In its fullest glory it grazed 25,000 cattle on its 200,000 acres, owned 10,000 horses, and 3,000 Indian converts were engaged in its industrial activities. The walls of the Mission church were five feet in thickness; the tower had space for eight or more bells. When the Mexican government turned against the Missions the priests of San Luis Rey fled and the mission went into decay. In 1892, the work of restoration began and the mission is now again in use.
