McLean House. It was here that generals Grant and Lee met with members of their staffs to negotiate the surrender of the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia. A more unusual story is of the McLean. They previously owned a home near Manassas. During the battle of Bull Run, the Confederates used their home as a headquarters. After the battle, McKean decided to move away from the turmoil of War, but such as not the case, as the War followed them. The Mclean were present at the first major battle of the Civil War, and the final surrender took place in their living room.

In 1869 two adobe buildings were constructed at this stop on the Old Chisholm Trail to serve as general store, post office, and hotel. On March 4, 1871, Van Smith filed the first claim, 3 years later he was appointed postmaster, and the place was named Roswell for his father. Capt, Joseph C. Lea Came in 1877 and bought Smith's holdings, and a year later his father-in-law, Major W. W. Wildy bought out Wilburn and two other settlers, and presented this property to his daughter, Sally Wildy Lea.

This building, representing the old colonial Court House, was erected in Centre Square during the World War and was used by the York Co. committee for the sale of Liberty Bonds. Since the war it has been standing an Farquhar Park. York was originally settled by the Germans in 1729. The town was first named Yorktown, county seat of York County in 1749. First Court House was erected in center square 1756. Continental Congress being compelled to leave Philadelphia, held its sessions in this building from Sep. 17, 1777 to june 17, 1778. During this time York was the capitol of the United States.
