Title: Washington's Headquarters White Plains (NY), Chrome unused
Description:
Owned and restored by the County of Westchester. Daughters of the American Revolution, White Plains Chapter, Custodian. This house stands on ground that was originally part of a tract of 600 acres acquired by John Miller in 1680. In 1770 his son, Elijah Miller added the two rooms on the west. Three times during the stormy days of the Revolution, Washington made this house his headquarters - during the Battle in 1776, in the summer of 1778, and in 1781. The ancient sycamore tree at corner of house is said to be about 300 years old, and must have shaded this corner of the house when Washington occupied the little bedroom. It was second prize given by N. Y. State for historic trees, and is recorded in the Hall of Fame for Trees in Washington.
