Watercolor by Talitha Botsford. Designed as a replica of a Mississippi steamboat pilot house, this octagonal study stood at Quarry farm on East Hill in Elmira, N. Y. for 78 years before it was moved in 1952 to the Elmira College campus. It was in this study in the summer of 1874 that Mark Twain wrote most of Tom Sawyer, and subsequently parts of many of his best known works, including The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, the Prince and the Pauper, Life on the Mississippi and A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court.

Y. may be seen a panoramic mural of the valley as seen from Harris Hill Glider field. Since its selection by the American Aeronautical Society as the national center of gliding research and development because of ideal air currents, over half a million dollars has been spent at Harris Hill on buildings, hangars, runways and roads. It has been for several years the site of the annual National Glider Association Meeting.

These two fence-painting boyhood chums, for whom Samuel Langhorne Clemens will always be remembered as Mark Twain, are the subjects of lawn ornaments at the quarry Farm on Watercure Hill in Elmira. N. Y. Where mark Twain wrote in whole or part eight of his volumes including the first half Adventures of tom Sawyer (1874) and the Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, 1876, 1880 and 1883.

Y. where he was married to an Elmiran, Oliva Langdon, and lived here over 30 years. This octagonal shaped study was built for Mark Twain in 1874 by his sister -in-law, Susan Crane, and moved in 1951 from its original location on the Quarry Farm on East Hill to the Elmira College Campus.
