Description:
Long Ago when the saddle horse and overland stage followed beaten trails up and down rugged mountain wildernesses, a day's journey lay between points we now pass in a half-hour's ride behind our horse of steel. Then each peculiarity of nature in any section was relatively more prominent than now, and the name it bore had usually some local significance. Hence Johnson's Canyon, a picturesque gorge a few miles west of Williams, bears the name of a one time local character.

Natural tunnel, on the Virginia Southwestern Ry. Scott county, is one of the greatest of Virginia's natural wonders. From out of a semi-cylindrical canyon whose perpendicular walls of blue and gray limestone seem to reach to the very skies. Natural Tunnel cleaves its way 900 feet through a mountain to the world beyond: its arches, 75 feet high and 80 feet broad, swallowing up railroad. telegraph poles and a mountain stream, still have space for more.

Highest point on the Santa Fe between Trinidad, Colo. And Raton, N. M. Raton tunnel, the highest point on the Santa Fe. Altitude 7,622 feet. The tunnel at Raton Pass is 15 miles beyond Trinidad. The track follows the Old Santa fe trail, which is one of the oldest human pathways found on this continent. the grade up the pass in remarkably steep; two powerful mountain engines are required to haul the train on the upward climb. From the car window one may see an endless variety of mountain views. the Santa Fe has recently completed a second tunnel considerably below the original tunnel.

For four miles, the track twists and turns down the mountain side into the lowlands; over high bridges, trestle spirals and through snow sheds, until it forms a complete loop. The Grand Canon of the Arkansas is nearly ten miles in length, extending from near Canon City to Parkdale. About midway is the Royal Gorge, the deepest and narrowest part of the Canon, where the walls rise to a height of 2,500 feet and the river channel is so restricted that the railroad is carried over the stream by a bridge, suspended from the rocks above.
