Description:
The Old Market House, first known as the State House, was constructed sometime prior to 1789. On November 21 of that year, a convention was held in this building and the people of North Carolina adopted the Constitution of the United States and also granted a charter for the Univ. of N.C., America's oldest state university. In 1817, the Market House became the Market Place where venison, pork, cheese, etc. were sold under the Moorish arches. When this symbolic landmark was destroyed by fire on May 29, 1831, it was rebuilt with funds donated from all over the U.S.
