Alton Dam
Alton (IL), Chrome unused
Description:
This large dam is controlled and maintained by the U.S. Corps of Engineers. It is located near the access free Lewis and Clark Bridge on Highway 67. Lock and Dam #26 at Alton is the last of a series of navigation and flood control dams on the Mississippi River. From Riverside Park in Alton, visitors can watch towboats and barges "locking through" the locks next to the dam. Most of the small craft awaiting their turn to go through the dam usually tie up near the eastern end of Alton Lake.
