Description:
The Northeast Rotunda, modelled after the Pantheon of ancient Rome, is the central building, though not the first erected. Begun in 1823, the portico was not finished until after the death of the founder, Thomas Jefferson (1826). It is approached by fourteen steps, giving an imposing beauty to its handsome portico, 50 by 28½ feet, supported by ten columns 28½ feet high.

The First Baptist Church exceptionally handsome and imposing brick edillce, which was erected at a cost of $23,000, and has a seating capacity of 800 people. The church was organized on August 18th 1831 with a membership of 51, but has increased so wonderfully that it now ranks fourth ingest of the Baptist church in Virginia.

Monticello, designed and built by Thomas Jefferson, is one of the most perfect examples of architecture in America. Begun in 1769, it was several years being built, as most of the materials used were made on the property - the timbers were hewn there, and the bricks and even the nails and hardware were made there. Jefferson was of an inventive turn of mind and his home contains many evidences of this, as several of the devices he contrived are in popular use today.
