Spillway and Power House. The Hydro-Electric Plant on the Susquehanna River at Conowingo, Maryland, which is part of the Philadelphia Electric Company System, is the largest water power development in the United States, with the exception of Niagara Falls. The dam, almost a mile across and surmounted by a highway bridge 20 feet wide, forms a lake fourteen miles long. The initial installation is 378,000 H. P. which will eventually be increased to 594,000 H. P. A 220,000 volt transmission line carries current to Philadelphia. Work was started March 8, 1926, and the first units were put into operation March 1, 1928.
