To the Hopi and Zuni Indians of northern Arizona and New Mexico, kachinas are supernatural beings that help them in their everyday lives. According to ritual, tribesmen impersonate both male and female kachinas and perform dances to call forth assistance from these supernatural forces. The Crow Mother is considered by some Hopis to be hoots disapproval if they are noisy or misbehave. The fierce Black Ogre demands food from the children and threatens to eat them if not satisfied. These 6" hand painted figurines are collected by visitors as token mementos of the many elaborately carved kachinas.

This monument was built over the grove of an Arabian who served this country for some 36 years. Hadji Ali, called Hi Jolly, was brought into this country to look after 75 camels used by the army in the southwest. The experiment failed because the sand was coarse and cut the camel's feet. The horse soldiers had no use for the beasts as they often When the railroad pushed west the Camel Corps turned loose their animals around 1865. Hi Jolly stayed with the army as a trusted scout, later he turned to mining and prospecting. When he died in 1902 at the age of 74 he had no worldly goods but he was rich in the knowledge that he left this world better than when he found it... M.P.

Benson was founded in 1880 as the railroad town for Tombstone. As early as 1860, however, its site was famous as the spot where the old Butterfield stages crossed the San Pedro. TODAY, IT IS AN IMPOSING NATIONAL MONUMENT; THE DESOLATE RUINS HAVE BEEN REMOVED, AND MUCH OF THE BUILDING RESTORED AS WAS POSSIBLE WITHOUT MARRING ITS ANTIQUITY. THE MISSION IS A PLEASANT STOPPING-OFF PLACE IN MAKING THE TRIP FROM TUCSON TO THE MEXICAN BORDER TOWN OF NOGALES.
