In 1818 Hypolite Bouchard, the French pirate, raided the town and pillaged for a week before sailing south. Monterey was the seat of intrigue and plotting even up to the time Commodore Sloat raised the American flag over the Customhouse in 1846. Today Monterey is a modern town with a touch of the past . . . M. P.
