This Great Dead Sea, the largest in the world, is located 18 miles west of Salt Lake City. It covers an approximate area of 2.140 square miles, being 50 miles wide and 75 miles long with an average depth of 13 feet. Like the Dead Sea in Palestine, it is fed by the Jordan River, but has no know outlet other than evaporation. The Salt Shrimp is the only living insect know to exist therein. The water is 21 per cent salt and millions of tons of salt are shipped annually from this source. The water of the lake is no heavy one cannot sink, affording the most delightful bathing in the world, which is enjoyed by thousands each season.

The color schemes for its furnishings and decorations were worked out by the architect of the building and is one of the most harmoniously furnished rooms in any public place. The rug is 22x48 feet and weigh 1,350 pounds. the lace curtains are hand made, requiring the entire time of one woman for six months to make one pair. the draperies around the windows are inlaid with pure gold and trimmed with pure gold lace, braid, and fringe. he tapestry is an exquisite specimen of embossed silk embroidery. the chandeliers are made of Utah gold and silver trimmed with cut glass. the mural paintings are by Louis Schettle, a noted American artist. The total cost of the furnishings of this room was $65,000.

This structure, originally holding double gates, formed part of the unique cobblestone wall around the property of Brigham Young. For several years it has been preserved as a landmark, having been reconstructed of cutstone. The Eagle, originally of carved wood, has been sheathed with copper, in order that it may withstand the elements. It has no special significance to the Mormons, except that they are always glad to see the outspread and protecting wings of our noble bird of freedom. the Eagle Gate stands at the head of the longest straight street in the world. Ensigne Peak is seen in the distance on the left.

Since ,other from all over the world have made new records with allover automobiles,stockcars ,hot-rods, motor cycles ,etc. The famous Pilots Peak in the back ground was used as a guide for crossing this Great Salt Desert by the Donner Party in 1846-later down hand -cards, Wagons and wheel tracks are still visible on certain parts of this barren desert
