Description:
When Winchester was first captured by the Federals in March, 1862, Gen. N. P. Banks selected this building for his headquarters. During the next year it was likewise and by Gen. R. H. Milroy, and again in the fall and winter of 1864-65 it was the headquarters of Gen. Philip H. Sheridan. From it General Sheridan began his ride to the battlefield of Cedar Creek made famous by the poem of Thomas Buchanan Read. For many years after the Civil War the building was known as the Episcopal Female Institute, and is now the home of the local lodge, Order of Elks.

Beneath the Christ Protestant Episcopal Church is a crypt containing the remains of Lord Fairfax, proprietor of the Northern Neck of Virginia, who died in 1781. In 1925 a tablet to his memory was erected by the vestry of the church.

Description:
This stately building typical of the old-time seat of local government in Virginia was erected in 1840. It occupies nearly the same spot as the first courthouse built 1745 - 51 by colonel James Wood, first County Clerk, on land dedicated to the public use by Thomas Lord Fairfax. the original building was about forty feet square and was constructed of logs dovetailed at the ends. It was repaired grounds there used to be a five-foot wall and within were whipping post and pillory, significant of two forms of punishment then in use.
