Description:
Old Blandford Church was built n 1735, and attended by the distinguished John Randolph, of Roanoke, who descended from Pocahontas; and many others of note and distinction of that period. Within the walls of its "moss grown battlement and ivy mantled towers" are engraved by some unknown one, the famous verses beginning "Thou art crumbling to the dust. old pile," which are published in connection with view of the interior.

On May 8, 1607, the first colonists came to the mouth of the Appomattox River, but it was not until 1646, when Governor Berkeley built Fort Henry on the site where the city now stands, that Petersburg began. Nearby lived Pocahontas, Virginia's most romantic figure. By the time of the Revolution, Petersburg had become a flourishing town.

The following lines by an unknown author were found written on its walls about 1841: Thou art crumbling to the dust, old pile, Thou art hastening to thy fall, And ' round thee in thy loneliness Clings the ivy to thy wall. The worshippers are scattered now Who knelt before thy shrine, And silence reigns where anthems rose, In days of ""Auld Lang Syne
