The Confederate Monument at the north side of Alabama's historic Capitol was erected in memory of the Confederate dead. Jefferson Davis, First president of the Confederacy who took his oath of office on the portico of the State Capitol at Montgomery, laid the cornerstone at ceremonies held April 26, 1889.

The First White House of the Confederacy was built in 1825. It was here that President Jefferson Davis and his family lived while Montgomery, Ala. Was the seat of the Confederate government. The residence was ocquired by the State as an official shrine in 1921 and moved to its present site. Most of the furnishings used by Jefferson Davis and his wife, Varina Howell Davis, are housed in this building which is open daily. No admission charge.

The roof is a barrel arch consisting of eleven segmental arches of reinforced concrete rising to 100 feet above the arena. The Coliseum, focal point for Alabama's agricultural and livestock program, is also used for rodeos, ice shows, etc. It is the largest State owned Coliseum in the U. S.

The famous Capitol Building of Alabama in Montgomery, was built in 1851, after the original building was destroyed by fire. The front portico was the scene of the swearing in of Jefferson Davis as president of eth Confederate States of America. Twin spiral staircases, still in daily use, arch upward three floors, and have no visible means of support. They are considered to be a major architectural accomplishment.

Confederate Memorial Park

Description:
Located 37 miles north of Montgomery just off U.S. 31. A spacious house with adjoining buildings on 103 acres of land was given to Ala. In 1901 by Col. Jefferson Manly Falkner, Confederate States Army, for a home and cemetery for Confederate soldiers. In 1937 the home was closed and the cemetery was neglected. Just the 2 cemeteries remain from he "Home" as it was from 1902 to 1937. The Alabama Daughters of the Confederacy and the Sons of Confederate Veterans have had Memorial services at the cemetery annually since 1956. Ala. Legislature established it as a Confederate Memorial Park in 1964. At UDC Annual Convention in 1965 Gov. George C. Wallace announced the first appropriation for its restoration.
