1861-1912 Above this spot, on the outer wall of the Caldwell House formerly occupying this site, was an exterior balcony. Abraham Lincoln addressed the people of Lancaster from this balcony February 22, 1861 on the journy from his home in Springfield, Ill., to Washington for his first Inauguration. James Buchanan, fifteenth President of the United States, was welcomed back to his Lancaster home by a great popular ovation under this balcony March 6, 1861.
