Albany is practically the head of navigation on the Hudson River, although steamboats of smaller tonnage than the giant river boats which tie up at Albany make the run to Troy, N. Y., six miles above. The State Capitol Building is a prominent feature in any view of the city, looming from its size and its elevation far above all surrounding objects. The city is a divisional point for commerce between the East and the West: also historically noted as the earliest permanent settlement (barring James town, Virginia,) in the original thirteen Colonies.
