Title: Alexander Hamilton Maryland (MD), Linen unused
Description:
Built Sparrows Point, Md., 1924 Length, 339 ft. 2,367 tons. Anyone wanting to ride a sidewheel steamboat on tidewater today must take the Alexander Hamilton, one of the last two boats of the Hudson river Day Line and one of the only three passenger sidewheelers left in service in the United States. She now runs only in summer, mainly between New York and Poughkeepsie. The Alexander Hamilton is marked as a Hudson Day Boat by her long pointed bow with its three tiers of open decks. Her broad superstructure tapers to a narrow stern, and the position of her funnels aft of amidships shows that her boilers are aft of her machinery. These are inclined engines, which require no walking beam, because the slanted pistons are connected directly to the wheel shaft. The Alexander Hamilton contracts sharply with the only other active American sidewheelers, the Mississippi excursion boats admiral and President. Their bows and sterns are wide and rounded their stacks far forward, and their horizontal engines well aft.

Title: Dongan Hills New York (NY), Linen unused
Description:
Built Mariners Harbor, N. Y. 1929 Length, 251 Ft. 2,026 tons. By 1830 double-ended ferryboats were a standard feature of the American harbor scene. Many still operate today. Though tunnels and bridges have greatly reduced their numbers. This ferry, the Dongan Hills, carries people and cars across New York harbor-between Manhattan and Staten Island. Representing the ultimate development of the typical steam ferry, she has two automobile gangways running from end to end of the main deck. Separated by the engine room enclosure and flanked by cabins ?on the guards? still marked ?Men? and ?Women,? though the sexes no longer travel on opposite sides of the boat. Her upper-deck passenger cabin is finished in wood ?steamboat paneling,? where newer boats have utilitarian metal surfaces. Her reciprocating engines turn a solid shaft with a propeller at each end. The Dongan Hills and nine younger fleet-mates offer one of the world's great transportation bargains: a 25-minute boat ride for nickel.

Tradition has it that her crew, on seeing British shot failing to penetrate the oak sides of the ship, dubbed her ?Old Ironsides.? Numerous other equally notable victories followed. She was condemned in 1828 but was saved when public sentiment was aroused by the poem ?Old Ironsides? by Oliver Wendell Holmes, a famous Massachusetts son. She is the oldest commissioned ship in the U. S. Navy.

Cunard Line R.M.S Aquitaine 45,650 Tons Length 901 feet Breadth 97 feet. Wanted: Ocean Liner Memorabilia Brochures Deck Plans Prints Posters China Models Menus Souvenirs Postcards etc. am especially looking for original 35mm color slides taken from the 1930's to the present Richard I Weiss P.O. Box 12304 Birmingham, Michigan 48012. Known as "The Ship Beautiful" the Aquitaine was built in 1914 for the Liverpool to New York service of the Cunard Steamship Co. After only three round voyages she was requisitioned by the government for use as an armed merchant cruiser but it was decided that employment of costly liners in this capacity was not practical, she was than converted for use a troopship than as a hospital ship and in 1916 again as a troopship. Reconditioned and converted from coal to oil firing she resumed transatlantic service in 1920 quickly becoming one of the most popular ships on the Atlantic, she made periodic cruises in the 1930's. In 1939 she was again requisitioned and converted for trooping service a roll she played until being released from the government in 1948. During 1948-49 she was used for austerity service between Southampton and Halifax. She was sold for demolition in 1950 arriving at Faslane in February and promptly broken up by BISCO Ltd. Aquintania was the last of the four funneled liners and the only major liner to serve in both world wars.
