Description:
COWBOYS' PRAYER O Lord, I've never lived where churches grow; I've loved creation better as it stood That day you finished it, so long ago, And looked upon your work and called it good. Just let me live my life as I've begun! And give me work that's open to the sky; Make me a partner of the wind and sun, And I won't ask a life that's soft and high. Make me as big and open as the plains; As honest as the horse between my knees; Clean as the wind that blows behind the rains; Free as the hawk tha circles down the breeze. Just keep an eye on all that's done and said; Just right me sometime when I turn aside; And guide me on the long, dim trail ahead-- That stretches upward toward the Great Divide. Author Unknown THIS LITTLE VERSE EXPRESSES THE INARTICULATE FEELINGS OF THE OUTDOORS-MAN TOWARD LIFE AND NATURE BETTER THAN ANY OTHER WORDS COULD
Description:
by Oren Arnold Sudden terror gripped Mrs. Lewis Stevens of Arizona when she glanced out the window on this morning in 1874. She alone guarded their three small children, here at Lonesome Ranch. And she had just seen a "rag" move on a bush outside. "I haven't hung out any rags!" she whispered to herself. Quickly then she picked up her shotgun. BANG! The rag was an Apache INdian's headpiece! He leaped up, screamed, and fell dead. Savages had surrounded the house by stealth! For hours she fought them off, shooting from her windows, displaying fine courage. Late that day cowboys heard the noise, came and drove the Indians away. "I'll take word in to Mr. Stevens at town, ma'am," one cowboy volunteered. "Just write out whatever you want to say." This pioneer mother thought hard, then wrote her message. In due time Mr. Stevens received it, and read: Dear Lewis: The Apaches come. I am might nigh out of buckshot. Please send me some more. Your loving wife
Description:
Bulldogging, or steer wrestling as it is sometimes called in rodeos, is often performed on the range in the line with every day duty. When a cowboy breaks his rope or has used it in tying up a wild steer and still has an other to go, with nothing except a small rope used for tying down cattle, he proceeds to catch the steer with his hands, wrestling down and tying him, that he may come back later and lead him out or bring a few gentle cattle with which to drive him
Description:
POST CARD STORIETTES TWO GUN Lover by Oren Arnold Roughest toughest two-gun gent in all the history of the West was Roy Bean, self-appointed judge and desperado killer who founded and bossed a town named Vinegaroon. He was too bashful ever to look at a woman, but one day he found a magazine cover picturing beautiful Lily Langtry, famous actress. Roy fell deeply in love. He enshrined her picture over the bar of his saloon, and shot a man who made a smutty remark about it. He wrote Lily a love letter every day for three years. He changed the name of his town to Langtry, in her honor. He went to New York, sat six nights in a theater to watch her act but never made his presence known. Back home he wrote some more, and pined, and pined. Time marched on. One day a train stopped in Langtry. From a special car came a passenger who asked for Roy Bean. "Why miss," the station agent said, "Roy died only last week." "Oh-h-h-h!" cried the passenger, in sudden tears. "I did so want to meet the man who wrote such sweet letters and named his town for me." Dramatic TRUE Stories from the GREAT WEST No. 14

Title:
Ghost Hole Bandits
Linen unused

Description:
by Oren Arnold For a month the sheriff and posse had guarded the entrance to this great mountain cavern, shooting at it every few minutes. Three known train robbers were trapped inside. "We'll starve them out," said the sheriff, "if it takes a year." But a cowboy rode by and drawled, "Sheriff, I seen them bandits in town last week!" Furious, the sheriff let his posse in with drawn guns. Nobody was there. He built a fire deep in the cave and sure enough, telltale smoke revealed a hidden exit on the other side of the mountain. Detectives finally trailed the bandits, killed two and sent the third to prison. After serving 28 years he was released. He came back to the Ghost Hole cave. A new detective, hoping to locate the stolen money, followed him in. But once more the bandit used the secret exit and was never seen again! He had dug up a buried leather bag and gotten away with $28,000!
Description:
by Oren Arnold One day in the 1880's a man dressed as a magnificent CABALLERO rode into Arizona and said he owned 12,000,000 rich acres, inherited as an old Spanish land grant. The U.S. Government investigated his papers - and backed up his claim. Forthwith he made people pay for living on his land. One railroad paid him $50,000, a mine paid a like amount; every firm and individual had to pay heavy fees to this fellow - "Baron James Addison de Peralta-Reavis". But one day an Arizona printer happened to see his documents of inheritance. One paper, dated 1748, was printed in a type not even invented until 1875! Thus the great baron tumbled, and went to prison. But he had already collected a fortune, made himself internationally famous, had traveled the world over, and owned four mansions. His bogus barony still ranks as the most gigantic swindle in American history. Dramatic TrueSTories from the Great West

Silver Skeletons by Oren Arnold "Whar you goin', Ed?" Al Sieber asked his friend who was saddling a mule, one day in 1877. "Just out a ways, looking for stones," Ed Schieffelin replied. "Don't you know this country's full of Indians? Only stone you'll find will be your tombstone." But Ed rode out, alone. Next day his mule suddenly shied at something white. Ed dismounted. There on the hillside lay the skeletons of two men! Moreover, their outstretched arms touched a pile of silver nuggets. Excitedly Ed looked around, found the source of the ore, then rushed home to file his claim. In a few months he was a millionaire and a city of 15,000 people had sprung up there, wildest, toughest boom town in Western history. Its name? Remembering his friend's prophesy, Ed Schieffelin grinned to himself on that discovery day and said: "I'll name this place Tombstone." Thus Tombstone, Arizona, and its newspaper The Epitaph, have become famous the world 'round.
Title:
The Death Brand by Oren Arnold
Linen unused

Description:
Danger itself stalked cowboy Jess Hitson this July 4 in 1868. He was riding alone, but when he saw a stay calf he dropped his loop on it preparatory to branding. In a few minutes his iron was glowing in a fire. Then without warning - ZIP! An arrow streaked through his hat! He dropped instantly, reaching for his guns, making a breastwork of the tied calf. Soon, however, he saw that he would surely be slain, so between shots he did a little branding anyway. Jess Hitson was never seen again, and he doubtless died within the hour. How do we know all this? Because, three years after Hitson disappeared, a full grown steer was rounded up in that vicinity, and on its side was this burned report: 7-4-68 INDIANS HOT AS HELL JH It was cowboy nature to make his report to the boss in spite of savage Indians, and it was cowboy character also to comment on the weather. Adapted from the book HOT IRONS (Macmillion) by Oren Arnold and John P. Hale
