Jamestown 1622. Jamestown was the first permanent English settlement within the limits o the United States and was founded in 1607 by a small company under the leadership of Captain Newport. The settlers landed on May 14th, sent out exploring parties and began to build fortifications. The first attack from the Indians occurred within a fortnight and resulted in a victory for the Colonists. In 1619 the first legislative assembly in America was held at Jamestown, and here in the same year slavery was first introduced into the original thirteen colonies.
Description:
The Arrival of Pocahontas, accompanied by her husband, caused a great sensation in London, and she was received with much distinction. She was treated as a daughter of a king, and the old historians say that it was a constant tradition of that time that the King of England was highly offended at john Rolfe for marrying a royal princess. She was presented at court by Lady Delaware, and was “graciously used” and made much of by the king and queen. The Bishop of London, who was delighted at her conversion to Christianity, gave a grand entertainment in her honor, one of great pomp, ceremony and splendor. She was the new world personified in the gracious form of a little beauty of twenty-one, and the curious eyes of the fine gentlemen and ladies of London, noticing that there was no trace of awkwardness or embarrassment in her demeanor, overwhelmed her with attention, and she suddenly became the fashion. The fine life of London, with its rich costumes, gilded coaches and high revelry was a curious contrast to the first years of Pocahontas in the forests of Virginia, but it did not affect in any way the simplicity of character of this remarkable young woman.

Title:
Colonists Leaving England For Jamestown
Divided Back unused

Description:
Landing of the Maidens at Jamestown. The early voyagers to far off Virginia were simply men adventuring to seek their fortune, which they hoped to acquire quickly and return to England. This was not the spirit that founds new commonwealths, and it became apparent that unless Virginia was looked upon as home with wife and children to brighten it, the enterprise would mis-carry. In 1619 ninety young women of unexceptionable character, who had volunteered for the purpose, arrived at Jamestown from England. Singular features of the arrangement were that the husband was to repay the cost of their outfit and passage in tobacco, 120 pounds, amounting to about $80, and a proclamation of the Governor that young women, who betrothed themselves to more than one lover at a time would be severely punished. Happy marriages followed the arrival, and the establishment of real homes proved the plan to be a great success.
Description:
While visiting a treacherous relative, Chief japazaws, in 1612, Pocahontas, in exchange for a copper kettle, was delivered into the hands of captain Samuel Argall, who took her to Jamestown to be held as a hostage, in the hope of making terms with her father, the Indian King Powhatan. This plan proving a failure, Pocahontas remained at Jamestown, was taught the English language, became a devout Christian, and was baptized in the church there under the name of Rebecca, and shortly after married.

Title:
Colonists Leaving England For Jamestown
Divided Back unused

Description:
Exaggerated reports and wild tales of the early voyagers to Virginia, that gold and silver were so plentiful, cooking utensils were made of them and that native children had been seen playing in the unexplored forests with strings of diamonds and pearls around their necks, created great excitement amongst the English people, who longed for this wealth. Leading merchants of London organized a great trading company to make settlements in Virginia and in 1606 King James I. Granted a charter to the London Company for that purpose. They at once prepared to send out a colony, and on December 19th, 1606, 105 men listed as gentlemen, carpenters and laborers (but 12 were laborers), set sail down the Thames in the “Susan Constant” of 100 tons, the “Godspeed” of 40 tons and the “Discovery” of 20 tons, or as some authorities state, the “Sarah Constant,” “Goodspeed” and “Discovery,” in command of Admiral Christopher Newport. After a very long, tempestuous and eventful voyage they passed through the Virginia Capes late in April, 1607, touched at Cape Henry, Point Comfort, Hampton and other points, and finally landed and settled at Jamestown, May 13, 1607. (See cards Nos. 3, 4, 7 and 8.)

Title:
John Smith Making Toys For Pocahontas
Divided Back unused

Description:
The worthy captain having, thanks to Pocahontas, miraculously escaped death, as pictured and described on card No. 5, was required to remain with Powhatan to make “bells, beads and copper” for his tavorite child. It was a very curious fate for the hardy capaigner of many wars, to be buried in the virginia woods, the fashioner of toys for an Indian girl, and the soldier with his tanned face and sweeping mustache, shaping trinkets for the small slip of Virginia royalty, in her robe of feathers, white plumes and coral bracelets, presents an unusually interesting and attractive picture. Capt. Smith remained with powhatan for a year; they had sworn eternal friendship, and the King offered to adopt and give him a portion of his domain for a Dukedom, but in compliance with his repeatedly expressed desire to return to Jamestown, he was finally permitted to do so. (See cards 4, 5, 7 and 14.)
Description:
John Smith was born in Willoughby, England, in January, 1579. After much travel, he finally came to America, arriving at Cape Henry on April 26th, 1607, and although he spent but 2½ years in Virginia, his name is linked most prominently with its history. He died in England on June 21st. 1631, as recorded on a monument in St. Sepulcher's Church, London.

Title:
Jamestown In 1907
Divided Back unused

Description:
This view shows the present condition of the landing place of our first forefathers, and the seat of the first civil and religious establishment on the shores of North America. Jamestown, a peninsula of land at the time of landing on May 13, 1607, has since become an island and would, but for the protection afforded it y the United States Government, be gradually washed away by the James River, whose waters, as will be seen, have approached the very foundation of the precious and historical ruin of the old church. The town was burned during Bacon's rebellion in 1676, and it ceased to be the capital in 1699 when the seat of government was removed to Williamsburg, Virginia. Since that time it has been of no particular importance excepting from an historical stand point. (See Nos. 7, 16 and 17.)
