Description:
In September 1863 Austin became Lander County seat and built a fine stone courthouse. Austin incorporated as a city in January 1864 with a population of 7,000, second largest city in Nevada. The churches are Episcopal, Methodist and Catholic. Austin is one of the oldest towns in Nevada.

Rich silver ore was found here in 1862 and soon a mad rush was underway. Austin grew rapidly to 7,000 pop , and a few years later declined to 200 people. Austin is slowly growing again due to gold ore.
