Oldest restaurant west of the Mississippi; still open seven days a week (noon buffet a specialty). It was built in 1857 by Seth Hays. Its original appearance has been preserved. Council Grove is one of the most historical cities in Kansas. Fremont's expedition of 1845 and  Doniphan's troop bound for the Mexican War in 1846 camped here. In 1849, when the overland mail was established, it was a supply headquarter, followed the next year by the regular monthly coach service, Main Street is part of the old Sante Fe Trail.
