Description:
This memorial to Major-General Adam Stephen, founder of Martinsburg, stands on the west side of South Queen Street. In October, 1773, Stephen laid out Martinsburg on a plot of 130 acres, and was to have named his town Stephensburg. However, the word "Stephen" had been used in naming other Virginia towns, so he called his town Martinsburg for his friend, Col. Thomas Bryan Martin. Stephen commanded a division in the Revolution, voted for the adoption of the Federal Constitution while in the Virginia Assembly, and was the first Sheriff of Berkeley county.
