Title:
Totuava The Percomorph Fishes
White Border

Description:
Eriscion macdonaldi is a member of the Squeteague or weakfish family, its family name derived for the fact that when hooked the outh tears easily, this species is the largest of the weakfish and the record catch off the California coast is 172 pounds. closely related is the white sea-bass, Cynoscion nobilis. In these two species (C. nobiis and E. macdonaldi) the flesh is firmer than in the ordinary weakfish and thus bears shipment better. Both species are popular food and game fish. The totuava congregates in great numbrs near the mouth of the Colorado river and feeds in shallow water near the shoure. this accounts for the ease with which it can be approached and speared. The weakfish, Cynoscion regalis, is caught principally along the atlantic seaboard, and with sporting tackle gives the true disciple of Isaac Walton a real thrill. Its southern relative, cynoscion nebulosus, is also highly prized as a food and game fish but has been incorrectly known as sea trout.
