Stationed on a 200 foot cliff, overlooking Lake Superior, the lighthouse stands majestically, as a guide to boats plying the Great Lakes. Split Rock is so-named because two cliffs a quarter of a mile apart, when viewed from the lake, appear as one spilt in twain. It is a nationally famous, scenic point of interest on Minnesota's North Shore Drive, 46 miles from Duluth

Tallest light tower (193 feet) on the American coast and tallest brick lighthouse in the world. This tower erected in 1870 replaced the first built here on North Carolina coast in 1798. Its beacon warns mariners of dreaded Diamond Shoals which extend from the Cape's Point 13 miles seaward to the edge of the Gulf Stream where it comes closer to Southern Florida.
