Description:
Joaquin Miller thus describes a storm in the Canyon which he witnessed: "The battles of the elements roared far below us and all the time, as far as the eye could reach, the white clouds curled, drifted, drooped, died, then rose again. The thunder at intervals was fearfully impressive. We felt at one time that the temples, towers and battlements of red which burst here and there among the thunder clouds, must be crumbled into dust. The lighnting continually wrote the autograph of God on and through the clouds at our feet, but when the clouds would part, all would be as before."
Description:
The Hopi House is an exact reproduction of a Hopi Indian pueblo. It is an irregular stone structure plastered with adobe and rising three stories high. Here are Hopi men, women and children. Some decorating and burning pottery, others spinning yarn and weaving squaw dresses and blankets, and perhaps some maiden weaving a basket. Hopi land is the old province of Tusayan on the border of the Painted Desert. Several rooms in the Hopi House are devoted to a rare and costly exhibit of Indian handicraft

The various rock formations of the Grand Canyon have been given distinguishing names by scientists and nature lovers. Thus from Cape Horn on Bright Angel Trail one sees "The Battleship," the "Pyramid of Cheops," "Isis Temple" and the "Temple of Buddha." Also directly across the Canyon Bright Angel Creek may be seen
Description:
When you go down Bright Angel Trail you will gain an abiding sense of the real proportions of the canyon. For the first two miles the decent is sort of a Jacob's Ladder, zigzagging at an unrelenting pitch. At the end of two miles a comparatively gentle slope is reached. On the way are the Indian Gardens. Looking back from this level the huge towers that border the rim shrink to pigmies, yet less than one-half the decent has been made. Then the final trail begins through the granite towards the river. At the foot of the trail is the river, from which point is seen the Temple of Zoroaster
Description:
The Grand Canyon is a trough 6000 to 7000 feet deep, ten to twenty miles wide, hundreds of miles long, peopled with hundreds of peaks taller than any mountain east of the Rockies, and all ablaze with such color as no Eastern or European landscape ever knew. And as you sit on the brink the Divine Scene-Shifter gives you a new canyon every hour; with each degree of the sun's course the great countersunk mountains fade away and new ones are carved by the westering shadows

El Tovar occupies a site without parallel in the world - 7,000 feet above the level of the sea on the rim of the Grand Canyon of the Colorado River, and commanding a tremendous, awe-inspiring view unequalled anywhere in the world. The roaring Colorado River in the Canyon below on one side and on the other one hundred and eighty miles of fragrant pines of the Coconino Forest. The hotel is built of native boulders and pine logs from far-off Oregon. The architect has combined in admirable proportions the Swiss chalet and the Norway villa
Description:
When you go down Bright Angel Trail you will gain an abiding sense of the real proportions of the canyon. For the first two miles the descent is a sort of a Jacob's Ladder, zigzagging at an unrelenting pitch. At the end of two miles a comparatively gentle slope is reached. Looking back from the plateau the huge towers that border the rim shrink to pigmies, yet less than one-half the descent has been made. Then the final trail begins through the granite towards the river. At the foot of the trail is the river, from which points is seen the Temple of Zoroaster

"The panorama is the real overmastering charm. It is never twice the same. Although you think you have spelt out every temple and peak and escarpment, as the angle of the sunlight changes there begins a ghostly advance of colossal forms from the farther side, and what you had taken to be the ultimate wall is seen to be made up of still other isolated sculptures, revealed now for the first time."

Hermit Rim Road is a driveway 30 feet wide, built of crushed stone rolled to a smooth hard surface and sprinkled with crude oil, and leads from El Tovar Hotel to the head of Hermit Trail. From there a wide bridle path that can hardly be called a trail leads into the Canyon. At the first level is Hermit Camp, maintained or those desiring to remain awhile in the depths of the great chasm
Description:
The finest effects at the Grand Canyon are altogether uncommunicable by brush or pen. They give themselves up only to the personal presence, and no painter or writer can do more than suggest what they are. You cannot paint a silence, nor an emotion, nor a sob. If you are skillful you can suggest them to the imagination but that is all. Here even silence seems to have dimension and color
We felt at one time that the temples, towers, and battlements of red which burst here and there among the thunder clouds, must be crumbled into dust. The lightening continually wrote the autograph of God on and through the clouds at our feet, but when the clouds would part, all would be as before

Milwaukee Public Museum Group. River Erosion - Grand Canyon, Arizona. This group shows the Grand Canyon of the Colorado from Yavapi Point, where it is approximately fourteen miles wide and a mile deep.
