In the late 1800's when the Canadian west was wild and lawless, a land of buffalo hunters, trappers and whiskey traders, the North West Mounted Police moved in to bring peace to the new territory. Calgary was born when, in 1875, a contingent of "Mounties" entered the Bow Valley and built an outpost at the junction of the Bow and Elbow Rivers. The fort was named Calgary, a Gaelic word meaning "clear running water".
